The Assistant Treasurer, Senator Nick Sherry, today announced that Australia and Chile have signed a new income tax treaty - the first between the two countries. 'The new income tax treaty between Australia and Chile will provide certainty and stability of tax treatment for Australian and Chilean cross-border investors and reduce tax-related barriers so the economic relationship between our countries can continue to grow,' the Assistant Treasurer said. 'This is a comprehensive new tax treaty for Australia - and our second with a South American country.'.

The Assistant Treasurer, Senator Nick Sherry, has today announced the Rudd Government's plans to amend the tax law to confirm the practice of treating the investor in an instalment warrant over a single exchange traded security in a company, trust or stapled entity as the owner of the listed security for income tax purposes. 'This will benefit investors in instalment warrants primarily by confirming there is no capital gains tax (CGT) event at the time of the last instalment,' the Assistant Treasurer said. The income tax amendments will apply for assessments for the 2007-08 and later income years.

The National Library of Australia is calling for applications for the 2010 Community Heritage Grants. Applications for grants for collection management training workshops for staff and volunteers from community organisations to improve their skills when working with heritage collections are also welcome. The 2010 Community Heritage Grants Program is funded by the Australian Government through the National Library of Australia the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts the National Archives of Australia the National Film and Sound Archive and the National Museum of Australia.



Improving poor people’s access to financial services
PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY FOR INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE. The Australian aid program has been spending an average of $10 million a year since 2004 to improve poor people's access to financial services and this will increase to up to $20 million a year by 2012-13. Australia will assist formal and informal financial institutions to offer quality, affordable and fair financial services to the poor, including through microfinance and new technologies such as mobile phone banking.

Rudd Govt continues to support Landcare facilitators - The Hon Tony Burke MP - Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry
The Rudd Government is continuing its strong commitment to a national network of Landcare facilitators, with applications now open for further funding support. In June last year, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke announced a national network of facilitators to support community Landcare, following extensive discussions with local Landcare groups and a number of MPs. Mr Burke said the Government recognised the critical role of Landcare facilitators and wanted to ensure they could continue their work.

The ADF has received a tick of approval in environmental management from the Director of Environmental Impact Management, Mr Colin Trinder, in the Environmental Post Exercise Report for Exercise Talisman Saber 2009 (TS09). Chief of Joint Operations Lieutenant General Mark Evans said the report is a good indication of Defences commitment to upholding the Statement of Environment and Heritage Principles, as agreed to in 2005 by Chief of the Defence Force Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston and the Commander US Pacific Command, Admiral Timothy Keating.
