Joint Statement by Australia and South Africa on continued cooperation on climate change
Australia and South Africa welcome the signing on 5 February 2010 of a letter of intent by the Australian Minister for Trade, the Hon Simon Crean MP, and the South African Minister for Water and Environmental Affairs, the Hon Buyelwa Sonjica, that will frame future bilateral cooperation on climate change matters. Australia and South Africa have been cooperating on climate change matters under a Climate Change Partnership since 2006. It was also agreed that Australia and South Africa would exchange experiences and lessons learned on climate change policies and measures - with a particular focus on clean coal technologies and regulatory and institutional frameworks.



Strengthening the Australia-Africa Partnership
Trade Minister Simon Crean today signed a letter of intent with South Africas Minister for Water and Environmental Affairs, Buyelwa Sonjica to renew the Australia-South Africa climate change partnership. An emphasis on consulting and capacity building is part of the Australian brand and this is what we are bringing to Africa , Mr Crean said. Mr Crean promoted the credentials of Australian Mining companies and noted current and prospective Australian mining investment in Africa is estimated at more than $20 billion, spread across 35 countries.



08 Feb 2010: Vexation over out–of–date compensation - Commonwealth Ombudsman
Australia Post has rejected a Postal Industry Ombudsman (PIO ) recommendation to review the level of compensation payable to customers whose mail has been lost or damaged, even though the dollar figure is the same as it was 22 years ago. Postal customers would expect that the level of compensation for service failure would be reconsidered in light of changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI ), or at least be reviewed whenever the cost of basic postage is reviewed, the Ombudsman said. Professor McMillan rebuffed Australia Posts suggestion that compensation provided for ordinary items should be set as a proportion (half) of that for registered items.

Defence Ministers visit Gallipoli. The Australian Minister for Defence, Senator John Faulkner, and his New Zealand counterpart, Minister for Defence, the Hon. Senator Faulkner has just attended a NATO Defence Ministers meeting in Istanbul and took the opportunity to visit the Gallipoli battlefields and memorials.

Senator Faulkner also met with a range of Ministerial counterparts from Regional Command (South) to discuss the year ahead, including the focus on training of the Afghan National Security Forces.
